St Peters Anglican Church Oatlands

The township of Oatlands was named by Governor Macquarie in 1821. Soon after, Anglican services were held in various buildings including the courthouse. In 1833 a public meeting of 110 Anglicans promised 350 pounds to build a church.

Land for the building was donated by Thomas Anstey with the condition that the tower was visible from “Anstey Barton”. Plans for the church were drawn up by John Lee Archer and Robert De Little with construction beginning in 1838. The supervising stonemason was George Aitcheson.
The buildings were completed in 1841 and consecrated by the first bishop of Van Dieman’s Land, Dr R. F. Dixon in September 1844 with 300 parishioners in attendance.
In 1853, 42 pounds was received in offerings and pew rents were 12 pounds.

Stain glass windows are donated and dedicated to various local families. Plaques on the internal walls are memorials to local parishioners. The plaque for Cliff Thomas sits above the pew he always sat in. This church is well known for its amazing collection of tapestries, stitched over many years by members of the parish.
